Chinese smartphone makers have gained ground in Russia at Apple and Samsung’s expense. Chinese smartphones dominated the Russian market in the first half of 2023, accounting for more than 70% of total sales, according the well-known consumer electronics retailer M.Video-Eldorado. The figure has increased from almost 55% the year before. Overall smartphone demand in Russia is up 17% from this time last year, with close to 13 million handsets sold.

The two leading smartphone brands in Russia are Xiaomi and Realme, which now dominate the market. It is still possible to import Apple and Samsung products in an unauthorised or “parallel” manner. In the Russian market, they have fallen to third and fourth place, respectively.

According to a statement from MVideo, Chinese firms “systematically continue to strengthen their presence,” noting that demand for their flagship models and foldable devices is particularly strong. According to M.Video, China produced eight of the top ten selling cellphones in Russia during the first half of this year. The shift in the smartphone market is being reflected on Russian roadways as well.

After the war in Ukraine, the majority of Western brands formally departed the Russian market, and Beijing has since emerged as Moscow’s top supplier of everything from electronics to autos.

Officials cannot use iPhones

According to reports, the Kremlin has instructed officials to avoid using Apple iPhones because Western intelligence services have infiltrated them with spying software. However, Apple has refuted those allegations.
