In the IPL 2023 match between the Titans and Super Giants, Shubman Gill delivered an outstanding performance as the Titans emerged victorious in a dominant fashion.

Gujarat Titans are on track to defend their championship in the tail half of the season, where they are gaining a beguiling momentum. From the heavy-metal opening-wicket stand between Wriddhiman Saha and Shubman Gill that laid the foundation of a high-riser total to their clinical fielding and multi-dimensional bowling utility, the streak of ruthlessness shone brightly in their 56-run thrashing of Lucknow Super Giants as they nearly sealed a knockout spot.

Shubman Gill may not be the most exciting or reliable batsman in T20 cricket, but there may be more damaging batsmen than him. Few, though, simplify batting in this format as well as Gill does; it’s as if he’s a mystic who removes T20 batting of its absurd power-hitting while remaining unaffected by the extent of sophistry. If you isolate any of his hits from different forms and obfuscate the colour of his jersey, much of the shot-making appears to be the same. His batting pace may change, but his strokes wouldn’t.

Great batters are known for their ability to change into many attires with ease, yet one can still tell the difference without careful inspection. Even Virat Kohli adjusts little but noticeably from one format to the other. For example, he occasionally stands a little bit deeper in the crease, occasionally widens his stance, and regularly steps out to quicks.
