A complaint has been filed by Samsung Display, a division of Samsung Electronics, against China’s BOE Technology for allegedly violating five patents pertaining to displays used in mobile devices, including Apple’s iPhone 12. A US court in East Texas that is renowned for its speedy case processing is where the lawsuit was filed. In order to prevent the import and sale of the infringing displays, Samsung Display is requesting damages as well as an injunction.
The most recent iPhone model from Apple, the iPhone 14, features OLED displays in both its Apple Watch and iPhone versions. The OLED market is now dominated by Samsung Display, but BOE has been making progress and eclipsed LG Display as the second-largest participant in the market last year, said market research company Omdia.
According to the lawsuit, the use of the patented technology has caused Samsung Display irreparable injury and will continue to do so. After BOE Technology sued Samsung Display, Samsung Display’s Chinese subsidiary, and Samsung Electronics’ branch in China for violating its patents, this lawsuit was brought. Industry insiders speculate that BOE’s legal action against Samsung could be a move to obstruct the Korean firm’s expansion in China. Following Samsung Display’s complaint to the US International Trade Commission in December 2022, which sparked an investigation into a number of companies suspected of marketing OLED panels as alternatives for mobile devices, BOE filed this countersuit.
